Pulling it together – Chantelle’s Story
Thanks to CONTACT – South Simcoe Community Information Centre, a United Way
funded agency, Chantelle was able to get her life back on track with her three young
children after suffering a debilitating divorce that left her with no income and facing
eviction when the owner of the house she was living in sold.
Chantelle was feeling frustrated and unsupported by the legal system but was bound
and determined to change her circumstances even though she could barely make
ends meet. Nevertheless, she was able to find accommodations and started working
in a factory in order save enough money to fulfill her career ambitions to be a dental
hygienist (which she subsequently graduated). After graduation, Chantelle was only
able to secure part-time employment and soon fell behind in rent payments and
struggled to keep up with the mounting expenses. To make matters worse, she was
never able to get court ordered child support payments.
In desperation, Chantelle turned to CONTACT and through the support of the
Housing Support worker, Chantelle received some assistance with her rent and they
were able to negotiate with the landlord for leniency and patience. Happily, Chantelle
soon got full time employment as a hygienist and was able to support herself and
children.
