Changing lives through mentorship: A Little Sister’s story
Thanks to Big Sisters Association of Huronia, a United Way of Greater Simcoe
County funded agency, Tracey has made a life-long friend and learned valuable life
lessons.
Tracey comes from a single-parent family. From a very young age Tracey has
witnessed various forms of violence in her home. As a result, Tracey withdrew
socially and had a difficult time forming friendships and coping at school. Her grades
and self-esteem suffered.
When Tracey was matched with her Big Sister it was a magical experience. The
magic began when Tracey’s Big Sister provided her with a safe and fun escape from
the violence she was exposed to at home. They developed a trusting relationship and
Tracey learned alternative ways to deal with conflict.
Through the simple power of mentoring, Tracey now displays renewed confidence
that has empowered her to make friends and try new things. Creating new
experiences and broadening horizons is what Big Sisters of Huronia is all about.
Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give a child is your time.
