Giving to charity: Information for donors from Canada Revenue Agency
Our Community Fund
One decision. One donation. Even if you don’t think about it for the rest of the year, your donation to the United Way of Greater Simcoe County Community Fund is improving lives in Simcoe County every day. United Way touches one in three lives. That’s approximately 150,000 people every year!
Your donation helps people who are abused and people who are addicted. You help families in distress and support troubled children and youth. You help the mentally ill, the terminally ill, and the people who care for them.
United Way of Greater Simcoe County’s Community Fund supports five priority areas:
- Healthy, stable communities;
- Reduced cycles of poverty & abuse;
- Living with independence and dignity;
- Healthy, thriving children & youth; and,
- Strong, nurturing families.
Every dollar raised by United Way in Simcoe County stays in Simcoe county, helping those most in need. YOUR donation to United Way of Greater Simcoe County's Community Fund has the potential to impact an entire community!

GIFTS OF SECURITIES
Donating securities is one of the many ways you can give to United Way. Recent changes to federal tax regulations make this type of giving more beneficial and efficient than ever before. By giving securities to United Way, you help build stronger communities - and you receive a significant tax credit!
Under new federal tax changes effective June 2006, you can donate appreciated securities to United Way without paying any capital gains tax. In addition, you receive a tax receipt for the full value of the shares. Previously, donors paid capital gains tax on 25 percent of the gain. While tax incentives are not the only reason to give to charity, they are an important consideration.
For your convenience the necessary forms are provided here:

A timely example is related to BCE shares which many Canadians have held for years. As a result, they may have big capital gains bills to pay when BCE is sold to a group led by Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. One way to escape that fate is to donate enough shares so that capital gains are eliminated and a tax credit is created.
